Principal Design Features | High Copper Alloy. Beryllium Coppers are available in ductile, heat treatable tempers and in mill hardened tempers. Alloys are used in a wide range of applications requiring very high strength and stiffness with good conductivity. C17200 can develop more than 200 ksi (1380 MPa) tensile strength. |
Applications | Typical uses include electrical/electronic connectors, current-carrying springs, precision screw machined parts, welding electrodes, bearings, plastic molds and corrosion resistant components. |
Machinability | The machinability rating of this alloy is 20. (Where Alloy 360 FC Brass is 100). |
Welding | Soldering is rated as "good", brazing is rated as "good", oxyacetylene welding is "not recommended", gas shielded arc welding is rated as "good", coated metal arc welding is rated as "good", spot welding is rated as " good", seam welding is rated as " fair", and butt welding is rated as "fair". |
Forging | The hot forgeability rating of this alloy is 40. (Forging brass=100). The recommended hot working temperature for this alloy is between 1200-1500 F. |
Material Notes: | Applications: busbars, bus conductors, waveguides, hollow conductors, lead-in wires and anodes for vacuum tubes, vacuum seals, transistor components, glass to metal seals, coaxial cables, klystrons, microwave tubes, and rectifiers.
Processing: Excellent hot and cold workability; good forgeability. Fabricated by bending, coining, coppersmithing, drawing and upsetting, hot forging and pressing, knurling, roll threading, shearing, spinning, swaging, and stamping. Corrosion Resistance: Good to excellent. Susceptible to galvanic corrosion when coupled with iron, aluminum, magnesium, lead, tin, and zinc. Good resistance to atmospheric, brackish water, sea water, and non-oxidizing acid corrosion, but avoid heating in oxidizing atmospheres or exposing to oxidizing acids, moist halogens, sulfides, ammonia, or solutions with ammonium ions. Forms: pipe, plate, rod, shapes, sheet, strip, tube, and wire. PB1 or Phosphor bronze is an alloy comprised of tin and copper that has also had phosphorus added to it during the casting process.
The main benefits of phosphor bronze are that is has a good resistance to cold and corrosion, (approaching that of aluminium bronze) as well as both an excellent mechanical strength and high fatigue strength.
PB1 is a single phase alloy that is suitable for cold working and its good corrosion resistance to sea water and brine make it well suited to for both pump and valve components.
It is also suited for applications such as heavy load gears, worm wheels and bearings that have medium to high loads as well as speeds.
Phosphor bronze also has good resistance to impact loading and pounding. In order to use PB1 in these applications the metal must have good lubrication and alignment.
